Day 1 Hitchin to Whitehaven

Punctures and getting lost were the theme of the day. My hydration pack sprang a leak, the last thing you want is a wet backside and no drink so the art of puncture repair was required. 3 slow punctures with no obvious cause delayed me a lot meaning I had to ride like a demon to make the time up. I needn’t have bothered because just outside Milton Keynes the cycle route signs ran out and I became completely lost missing my train into the bargain.
Things I wish I’d photographed along the way include a llama near Cranfield and a yummy mummy with the most enormous industrial build 4 seater push chair which was viewed from ground level while I sat on the pavement fixing one of the punctures.
Lasting memories include the beauty of the sun on the river in Bedford with the smell of the new mown grass mixing with the sweet aroma of burning cannabis resin drifting from the threatening looking groups of youths lounging on the banks.
Things I wouldn’t do again would include the near death experience with wagons on the dual carriageway at MK while I got my bearings The forecast for tomorrow is rain rain rain, very unusual in the Lake District I’m told.
Food, beer and beauty sleep await me at Whitehaven, 48 miles cycled, I’m ready!

Day 2

Second leg over, today has been rain mud and steep hills.
Best time was flat out descent of Whinlatter, beats any ride at Alton towers, worst was starting again after lunch.
In the end the youngsters beat me but at one point I thought I was going to demonstrate the Tortoise and the Hare
No llamas but a lot of sheep
Crossed the M1 yesterday, the M6 today and on Sunday I’ll cross the A1, perhaps there is an idea for some future cross motorway trip

Leg 3 the big climbs done
On a day that started in heavy rain and continued in torrential rain up the steepest climbs the C2C has to offer, the highlight was tearing down the final descent to Nenthead, ignoring the warnings to cyclists to slow down and landing at the Miners Arms for end of day beer
Soaked to the skin but very happy to be in the steamy warmth of the pub
Big day tomorrow, early night
